Transfer Extensions
Transfers are a funny thing, almost everybody plays them yet few know why. A widely believed theory is that the main advantage of Jacoby transfers is right siding the contract. While it is true that this is advantageous, it is not that great a gain. The best part about transfers is the ability to transfer and then bid again. Jeff Rubens wrote on the Useful Space Principle in 1981 giving a sound theoretical argument for transfers in a variety of auctions including advancing to partners overcall.
Consider playing no system at all over a 1N opener. The only way to force in hearts is to jump to 3. Playing this way, if you have a two-suiter you can never show it below the 3N level, and if you have an invitational hand you can never show that. With transfers, you can show almost every hand type because you can transfer and then define your hand better with a second bid at a low level. Even two-way stayman can have problems with the timing of some auctions if you hold a two-suiter. For instance: 1N-2-2-3. Now if you have say, hearts and clubs, you are never able to show the clubs.
One problem I have found in transfer sequences is bidding after the second suit is shown. If the auction starts 1N-2-2-3 and opener does not have 3 hearts he may have some problems. He may not want to go past 3N to show a club fit, especially at matchpoints. He might try a punt with 3 as a cooperative noise, or may just bid 3N discouraging partner. These leaves ambiguity about all bids that are not a raise of a major. They could be a 5 card suit, a NT probe with weakness in the other suit, or an advanced cue for clubs. The auctions lack the necessary clarity responder needs to be able to make an intelligent decision about strain and level. This is why I have come up with transfer extensions.
With transfer extensions, the second bid after a Jacoby transfer is another transfer. So:
1N-2
2-2=invitational with 5 hearts (like a 2N rebid)
1N-2
2-2N=4+ clubs GF
1N-2
2-3=4+diamonds GF
1N-2
2-3=6+ hearts invite
1N-2
2-3=5-5 majors invite
Higher=Splinters.
You may be wondering what the gain of the second round transfers is. It solves the ambiguity of the auctions because opener can now support the minor below 3N. He never has to worry about going past 3N to raise partner. Over 2N or 3 he can bid 3 of partners minor with 4 card or longer support, or 3 of partners major with 3 card support there. This means if opener bids one of the other suits it denies support for both of responder's suits and would usually indicate a 5 card or longer suit. The only time it could be a 4 card suit is if opener was specifically 4-4 in the unbid suits with weakness in the 4th suit. If opener completes the second "transfer" responder has room to pattern out economically. The auctions will time out much better if a minor suit fit is found. All you give up to play transfer extensions after a transfer to hearts is transferring and then bidding 2 spades. This is usually played as 5 hearts and 4+ spades with invitational values. Usually with that shape and 8 points you can afford to force to game, and with less than that you can bid garbage stayman. It is not perfect, but the invite is of limited use and the gains definitely outweigh the loss.
For spades things are a little bit trickier. You must free up this auction:
1N-2
2x-2
In transfer extensions, this auction would show any hand with 5 or more spades and invitational values. I actually consider this a gain, as you are able to stop in 2 on a lot of hands where the field will get to 2N or 3. Note, in this auction a raise to 3 would be a choice of games. Re-invites have no use at all. With 5 spades and 4 hearts and a weak hand you just have to transfer to spades and pass. The structure after a spade transfer would be:
1N-2
2-2N=4+ clubs GF
1N-2
2-3=4+diamonds GF
1N-2
2-3=5-5 majors GF
1N-2
2-3=6+ spades 1 suited slam try.
1N-2
2-3=6+ spades invite.
Higher=Splinters.
Note that here 3 spades has the normal meaning and 3 hearts is a 1 suited slam try. This way you don't have to go through Jacoby then jump to game to show the hand and gain room to explore for slam.
If you are willing to give up being able to bid stayman with 5 spades, 4 hearts, and a weak hand and having the ability to show 5 hearts and 4 spades then you can play transfer extensions. To summarize, you gain the following:

- Clarity of all bids after responder shows his second suit.
- The ability to show a 1 suited slam try in spades and still have room to explore below the game level.
- More economical auctions after the second suit is shown.
I think the gains clearly outweigh the losses, but I'll let the readers decide.
Update: It has been called to my attention that this convention had already been thought of/used by other people, notably Danny Kleinman and possibly many others. It was negligent to imply that I was the first to invent this convention without checking to see if that was true. Though I thought of it independently, I was definitely not the first one to have thought of it.

Hi Justin,
This seems like a clear improvement to standard methods. I like to play a gadget where 1NT-2C-2M-2NT is forcing to game and asks for more information (either to find a 5-card major or a wide open suit). As a consequence, we play that the auctions 1NT-2D-2H-2NT and 1NT-2H-2S-2NT show invitational hands with exactly a 4-card major. Can you think of any way that we can combine this method with yours, it seems that there are not enough bids!
The only thing I can think of is playing that 1NT-2C-2X-2S is invitational with either 4 or 5 spades, and 1NT-2D-2H-2S is also invitational with either 4 or 5 hearts. The disadvantage is that opener has to bid 2NT with a minimum and exactly 2 spades, so nothing is lost with respect to standard methods. What do you think?

1)You didn't come up with this yourself. Well I take it back, you may have come up with it independantly, but I've come across it several times before.
2)There is actually another neat advantage. After 1N 2C 2D/H 2S 2N or 1N 2D 2H 2S 2N, responder may be able to bid a sidesuit on his invitational hand, giving you a way to bid 5-5 invitational hands (I suppose you could let it be 5-4 but that seems wrong to me).
3) There are minuses too. The obvious one is giving them more artificial bids to double, but there is another of the sort that people tend to overlook, which is that the auction times out differently. For example:
Old way: 1N 2H 2S 3D 3H, now responder may be 5143 and say oh good, 3N.
This way: 1N 2H 2S 3C 3D, responder must bypass 3N now with that shape? Or if responder bids 3N, is that a 5143 game hand, or a 5242 mild slam interest hand? There may be no clear answer, so you have just transferred ambiguity away from opener and toward responder (stupid pun intended).
Overall though, for a partnership willing to work those things out, I think more plusses than minuses are associated with the method. Lar.

Justin,
There are many logical "extensions" upon this. I might consider calling it the "Lall Adjunct" or the "Beer Corollary" in my system - for we can use it in both the 1NT, and the 1C-1X-1NT auctions with us.
I'm not much of a fan of crawling stayman anyway; now I have an excuse to ditch it permanently!

Han- I will think about it and try and figure out the best way of combining them and if it would be better to do so.
Josh- I am aware there are similar ideas (Inquiry pointed out ETM structure employs something similar) but I have never seen anyone document this convention. In the structures that do have something like this, they are usually "natural" relay methods. I think this is an easy extension to standard transfers while not being bogged down by relay methods. Also, lead directing Xs are obviously a disadvantage, I should have said so.

The problem that arises Mike, what if opener has no fit for either suit? Some hands are not automatically suitable to just bid 3N, for instance AKJx Ax Jxxx Qxx isn't really a 3N bid with such weak diamonds. Also, if opener has a hand very suitable for 3N yet a club fit and chooses to cuebid 3N may be lost forever.
By Justin Lall, at 6/20/05, 4:10 PM
Also Mike, you might belong in another suit. Maybe opener is 3253 and responder is 1534.
Question for the peanut gallery (I already know what Justin thinks). This came up in my gnt finals, we survived due to luck.
1NT P 2H X 2S P 3C P 4C P 4NT
2S promised 3 or more spades. Which suit is 4NT keycard for?
By Anonymous, at 6/20/05, 5:22 PM
Josh.. 4H over 4C is a cue and KC over 4C also should promise second round or better in Hearts yeah? So without cueing 4H I'd say 4N is KC for Clubs. I think the only right answer for this is KC for whatever suit partner will think it is for, 99% of the time partner will think it for Spades. So, away from the table I say Clubs based on theory, at the table and without prior discussion I'd say Spades 100% of the time. Andy~

Josh -
Since you had a lead directional double of 2H, you could play six ace around the transfer suit, so freeing up 4D and 4NT to ask about one suit in particular.
By GK, at 6/21/05, 4:26 AM
Also you can show a minor-major fit by this mechanism:
1Nt-p-2h-x
2s-p-3c-p
3s (spades and clubs).
Now you can make 3NT be six ace, serious, the fart ace convention, etc.

I do trust all of the concepts you’ve presented for your post. They are really convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too brief for newbies. May just you please lengthen them a little from next time? Thanks for the post.blogpostingservice.
